This is what I always called “the Mountain” sometimes my friends and I would climb the mountain despite the unstable ground to the very top and look out on the town. The views were stunning. You can see for miles in every direction.
I had many adventures when I lived in Morocco and was able to capture many of the incredible experiences that I had there. I wanted to start with my town a place that is very dear to me. I will be adding to this section with more pictures and stories so… stay posted!
When I volunteered with Peace Corps I lived in Alnif, Morocco. This oasis town is in the south between Zagora and Erfoud and about an hour from Tinghir. Through my time there i learned and grew a lot as a person and made alot of meaningful connections and had a lot of difficult and rewarding experiences. I find myself missing Alnif all the time- and I know my friends would laugh at me, asking “why would you miss this place when you live in America?”. I miss the warm sweet tea with friends. I also miss the heat and the slow stillness of life. Most of all I miss my friends and the people I really see as my family. Here are some of the best photos that I took when I lived there- I hope that by seeing the town through my eyes you can see how beautiful it really is.
The weather in Alnif is typically warm and sunny… given it is the desert. But the cloudy days were my favorite to capture because the landscape would change colors and add such definition to the landscape.
A river in the desert
One maybe two days a year there is a river in Alnif. The water comes from the snow melting from High Atlas mountains and flows in from the Todra Gorge in Tinghir. Everyone in town waits for the water to flow in- and the news spreads quickly. For the day+ everyone in town goes to see the water- the kids play in it and for days afterwards, everyone asks each other- “did you see the river”. The water passes through the town and continues South before it all dries. I managed to capture the picture below during the golden hour. It is one of the photos that I find myself looking back on every once in a while. To me this speaks to the goal of seeking good intentions, seeking out the little things in life that are special and taking the time to appreciate them.
